Abstract
The object of this investigation was to study experimentally the strength and behaviour of the corner and edge column-slab connections in reinforced concrete flat plates under different loading conditions. The view was to obtain data useful for establishing a method for analysis of these connections. Two test programmes involving tests on nineteen full size connections were conducted to study their strength and behaviour under load. The main variables included were: concrete strength, ratio of column width to the effective depth of the slab, the reinforcement ratio, ratio of bending moment to axial shear and condition of loading i.e. monotonic or reversed. A theoretical method for the analysis of a corner or an edge connection subjected to the effect of bending moment or combined axial load and bending moment was developed which takes into account the effects of the above mentioned variables. The method checked successfully against the test results of the writer and those of other investigators in the following cases. 1. Corner connection subjected to uni-axial bending moment about one major axis of the column cross section only. 2. Corner connection subjected to symmetrical bi-axial bending moment . 3. Edge connection subjected to bending moment in a plane perpendicular to the free edge of the slab. 4. Corner connection subjected to combined axial load and symmetrical bi-axial bending moment. 5. Corner connection subjected to combined axial load and bending moment about one major axis of the column cross section only. 6. Edge connection subjected to combined axial load and bending moment in a plane perpendicular to the free edge of the slab only.
