Abstract
Many recent theories of mind have been committed to the view that (a) mental states are individuated in terms of their content and that (b) content is a function of certain internal processes. However, recent arguments developed by Hilary Putnam and Tyler Burge suggest that at least one of these positions is false. This thesis examines the arguments of both Putnam and Burge. In addition, the second part of this thesis focuses upon the various options open to a theorist in psychology in light of the arguments put forward by Putnam and Burge. These positions correspond to the affirmation of (a) and the denial of (b) and vice versa. It is concluded that none of the options available are, at present, wholly acceptable.
