Abstract
An Art Museum for Children should take into account the changing role of the museum in society. It should have some recognition of the historical typology although adapted for contemporary use and meaning. The proposed project integrates the elements of the historical typology and the contemporary role of the museum within a meaningful environment for children. The proposed project is expressive of the user group. It reflects the differences between how an adult might use a building and how a child might use it by taking into account the development of the cognitive map and the limited ranging patterns of small children. As a museum is a pedagogical institution the proposed design focuses on how children learn about art and about the built environment and acknowledges the importance of play in this process. Lastly, the museum experience will be considered as part of every-day life rather than a distinct event. The proposed project facilitates physical and social integration within the urban fabric.
