Abstract
Gambling has been described in multiple ways, from various points of view, to include sociological, psychological, and pathological. This study will be based on these as well as other viewpoints in the attempt to reach a definition encompassing the many facets of gambling and the people who engage in it. We will present a spectrum of joueurs and joueuses as found in the literature of seventeenth and eighteenth-century France.
