DOCUMENT PREPARATION SYSTEMS
Abstract
The use of computers for text layout is certainly one of their fastest
growing application areas. Although the front office technology of word
processors dominates the public eye, larger and more powerful document
preparation systems are having a substantial impact on professional
quality typesetting of books and journals. This paper identifies
several problem areas for such systems, and reviews the capabilities and
performance of three widely used ones. It concludes that a high degree
of user programmability is the best way to cater for new tastes and new
requirements, in conjunction with pre- and post-processors for specialized
typesetting jobs.
