Abstract
The advent of the low-cost software-controlled raster printer has transformed typography from an esoteric and specialist discipline into a widely-available medium of expression. This article introduces basic ideas of typography and discusses the art of font design. Particular attention is paid to the digital representation of letter-forms and the problems raised by low-resolution technology. Examples of fonts are included, along with thumbnail sketches of their development. We conclude with a brief discussion of typeface protection issues.
