SOME RECURSIVE TECHNIQUES IN PICTURE DESCRIPTION
Abstract
The idea that recursion is a powerful tool for use by
graphic artists and designers has not previously been exploited to any
great extent. Although any recursive process may be expressed
iteratively, a certain class of pictures is more easily visualised
recursively and more concisely defined.
This paper describes GROPER, an interactive graphics language designed
to test the hypothesis that recursion can fill a need for the designer
and offer new possibilities to the computer artist. The language
enables recursion to be used to describe pictures which are difficult
or impossible to define in other graphics systems without considerable
programming effort.
