Abstract
This document presents the case for an expansion of the graduate program in Computer Science at the University of Calgary. Currently there are about 36 graduate students in the department. This total number is expected to remain fixed until incremental funds to support an expansion are approved and the student mix will move towards 28 masters students and 8 PhD students as the reinstated PhD program gains momentum. This enrolment limitation is due to resource restraints (including staff) and has been set by Graduate Studies. This document is divided into four major parts and contains six appendices. Sections 1-3 are mainly devoted to establishing the need for strong graduate programs in Computer Science. Section 4 argues the department's competence to run an expanded program. Section 5 explains the nature and structure of the proposed program expansion. Sections 6 to 11 cover the resources required and the budget. The last two sections (12 and 13) summarise the benefits of the expansion and give a scheme for its evaluation.
