dc.description.abstractBy examining Dwight L. Moody's Canadian revival campaigns of the late nineteenth century, this thesis will explore the significance of Canadian Protestants' reaction to his biblical-based evangelical message. The overwhelmingly positive response by both the laity and clergy indicate that Moody's orthodox ideas were not deemed outdated. The Introduction reviews the Canadian and American historiography on Moody. Chapter One outlines Moody's evangelical orthodox message. Chapter Two examines the coverage of his Canadian revival meetings by the anglophone daily press. Chapter Three presents the response of Canadian Protestant clergymen to Moody's work. This thesis concludes that during Dwight L. Moody's Canadian campaigns the old gospel of sin and salvation had not lost its power among the majority of Protestants. In the late nineteenth century Canada, intellectual and social reform thought had not eclipsed a traditional Christian interpretation.en
