| dc.description.abstract | Computer text processing systems have concentrated on providing convenient interfaces for preparing documents - assistance for the author, typesetter, and publisher. The emphasis is invariably on paper copy as the final product. In contrast, the present research breaks out of the "book" metaphor and addresses the on-line, interactive, reader of the document. Firstly, we advocate providing the on-line reader with flexible viewing options and sketch how this may be done. Secondly, we note the potential of active pages in videotex systems and point out the difficulty of integrating dynamic displays with document text. Thirdly, we develop a generalized notion of forms - dynamic text with which one can interact in a highly structured manner - and show how it encompasses a variety of interactive systems. | eng |
