dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this project was to provide criteria for facility component requirements and site selection for the relocation of The Calgary Indian Friendship Centre. The Calgary Native Friendship Society is considering relocating its Centre in order to improve the level of services and programs offered to urban Aboriginal people. Issues confronting urban Aboriginal people and the Calgary Native Friendship Society were identified to determine the role of the Society and Centre in Calgary's Aboriginal community. The Society's proposed organizational structure was discussed in relation to the implications of the structure change on the facility and its location. A Needs Assessment was performed using workshops and questionnaires, to determine locational and facility requirements. As the Society was attempting to use traditional symbols and values in all aspects of their planning, the Medicine Wheel was used to describe the facility components in relation to the Programming Medicine Wheel, currently being used by the Society. Recommendations for site selection for the new Calgary Indian Friendship Centre conclude this project. These recommendations were based on the study of tradition and Aboriginal urban issues, the requirements of the organization structure, the needs assessment, and the criteria for facility components and site consideration. It is hoped that Calgary Native Friendship Society's decision-makers will use this document to encourage on-going dialogue, as a tool for fundraising and future visioning exercises, and to select a suitable site for the relocation of the Friendship Centre.
