The contributions of the thesis is two-fold. First, a novel design methodology based on genetic programming and DNA computation to improve the performance of conventional communication system was proposed. Second, it develops a non-coherent chaotic spread spectrum system that is robust to channel noise and distortions. The developed scheme has better performance over conventional spread spectrum system in realistic channel environments. The application of the developed scheme to powerline communications in smart home networking was also investigated. Finally, a novel multilevel chaotic communication that performs both modulation and spreading is proposed. Genetic programming was used to design the underlying chaotic system for this communication scheme. Theoretical formulations and extensive numerical analysis were performed to show the advantages of these schemes. The research work presented in this thesis can be viewed as a small step towards achieving the aforementioned goal.
