- ItemOpen AccessBlended learning, blended instruction: a case study in course re-design(2015-06) Beatty, Susan; Hoffman, Nadine; Lee, Jennifer; Feng, Patrick; McDermott, BrendaUsing a course redesign initiative as an opportunity for research, an instructor, three librarians, and a writing specialist collaborated to investigate students' responses to a partially flipped, blended approach to learning in an interdisciplinary first- year science and technology course. The instructor invited librarians and a writing specialist to collaborate with him to develop course content which focused on improving the students' research and writing skills in an inquiry based, learner centric course. The redesign included partially flipped instruction on research skills, writing and citation in advance of classroom instruction. This was an instructional shift for the teachers and students. Students were asked to take more responsibility for their learning outside of the classroom and in advance of instruction, while we teachers took on the responsibility to create a learning experience whereby students could learn and apply new skills during class. It was a challenge to enter into this contract and to negotiate our way through a course redesign that has more than its fair share of new (to us) elements: online delivery, informative short, instructional videos, pre tests, post-tests, new content, and practical learning activities aligning with the content and the learning outcome timetable. As the course ended, students were surveyed on their understanding of their learning experience. The results tell us there is more work to be done in course development and student engagement with learning. Students did not necessarily understand the purpose and benefit of pre- class assignments, nor did they all participate. This presentation is a summary of the steps taken in course redesign and review the results of the student survey relating to the instructional elements.
- ItemOpen AccessCollaborating to Incorporate Library and Writing Skills in an Interdisciplinary Course: A Case Study(2015-11-13) Hoffman, Nadine; Lee, Jennifer; Feng, Patrick; Beatty, Susan; McDermott, BrendaLibrarians and writing centre staff were invited by the instructor of a first-year interdisciplinary course to collaborate with him on a course redesign emphasizing skill development in research and writing. Ferer (2012) highlights how library and writing support connections help students cross institutional boundaries. This case study is an example of using these connections to benefit students in a course. The team re-designed the library and writing portions of a first-year inquiry based learning course to incorporate many flipped classroom initiatives (Mangan, 2013) including pre-tests, in-class exercises, hands-on research components, writing workshops, and a summative assessment. Hands-on exercises were used to help engage students and promote skill development and critical thinking throughout the research and writing sessions. The instructor showed the importance of research and writing skills by dedicating lectures and assigning 25% of the course grade to pre-tests and a summative assessment. All techniques and assignments focussed on building resources to further the students’ final research project in the course. The instructor embedded the team at every possible step to achieve the course learning goals. Librarians and writing support staff were involved in developing the syllabus and lectures, creating and grading assessment pieces, and assisting student research and writing processes throughout the course. Ethics approval was acquired to conduct a research survey designed to understand student learning experiences. This session will provide an overview of the course with examples of how the instructor embedded librarians and writing centre staff throughout the course through collaboration. We will detail the flipped classroom techniques we incorporated, discuss survey results, and provide personal reflections on the process for student learning objectives as well as our own professional development for incorporating these flipped classroom techniques in future teaching opportunities.
- ItemOpen AccessE-Learning, the Virtual Classroom and Information Literacy Instruction: Where Do Libraries Fit In?(2005-06-17) Lee, Jennifer; Clark, DianeIs your academic institution moving towards Web-based courses? How is effective information literacy instruction provided to distance students or to many students when resources are already stretched? Best practices and strategies used by University of Calgary and Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) to develop successful online instruction will be discussed.
- ItemOpen AccessEmbedded Reference to Embedded Librarianship – Six Years at the University of Calgary(Routledge, 2011) Clyde, Jerremie; Lee, JenniferThis article is an update to a previous article on embedded office hours at the University of Calgary. It examines the nature of embedded librarianship at the University of Calgary and how it has changed from embedded reference to embedded librarianship over the past 6 years. There have been 3 main approaches to achieving embedded librarianship: office hours, long service, and purpose-built branch or special libraries. This article reviews the current literature on embedded librarianship and in that context describes, compares, and discusses the 3 approaches at the University of Calgary.
- ItemOpen AccessEvolving instruction in biology: using the web to improve in-class instruction(Emerald, 2004) MacMillan, Don; Lee, JenniferMuch debate in the library literature has focused on the effectiveness of web-based or online instruction versus traditional face-to-face library instruction. While both forms of library instruction have their strengths and weaknesses, the authors contend that a hybrid approach to information literacy instruction, by bringing the web into the classroom, offers students and instructors the greatest benefit. The authors’ experience with the evolution of instruction sessions for 1,100 first-year biology students from PowerPoint presentations to web-based courseware (WebCT) to its current web-based format illustrates the improvements to instruction that have accrued as the program has developed. These include the ability to address diverse learning styles, encourage active participation, provide 24/7 access, and foster increased student contact with librarians.
- ItemOpen Access"I Wouldn't Have Asked for Help if I had to go to the Library": Reference Services On Site(Association of College and Research Libraries, 2004) Lee, Jennifer; Hayden, K. Alix; MacMillan, DonStudents may be reluctant to ask questions at a library reference desk because it is such a public venue. It may be possible to give them an alternative by providing reference services outside of the library within a faculty lab or office. Advantages include convenience and proximity to students, faculty, and their learning communities. The service may also foster closer and stronger relationships with departments. It is important to choose a location wisely, as well as advertise widely. This paper examines the provision of reference services outside of the traditional library environment, and describes two initiatives involving librarians for the Faculty of Nursing and the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary.

- ItemOpen AccessLearning & teaching about the scholarly communication process: Findings from graduate students and supervisors(2022-11-11) Hurrell, Christie; Beatty, Susan; Cramer, Dana; Kardal, Jenna; Lee, Jennifer; McClurg, Caitlin; Murphy, JamesLearning about scholarly publishing is an important part of graduate students’ transition from novice learners to experts in their particular field. However, the complexity of the scholarly communication process, and of the social and emotional factors that accompany it, can be barriers to graduate student learning about academic publishing. This presentation will share insights from focus groups with graduate students and faculty mentors at a Canadian research-intensive university about learning and teaching scholarly communication. The presentation will highlight both areas of overlap and difference in how students and mentors discuss the barriers and enablers to learning and teaching about scholarly publishing. Key findings include differences in learning by program, supervisor, and structured supports. Our study provides insights into how librarians and mentors can better support graduate students as they learn about academic publishing.
- ItemOpen AccessLibrarian instructors in an undergraduate science course: a 20 year evolution(2021-05-27) McClurg, Caitlin; Lee, Jennifer; Ganshorn, Heather"SCIE 311: Write and Review Scientific Reports" is a long-running course at the University of Calgary that seeks to build students' skills as both users and producers of scientific literature. Over the past 20 years this course has increasingly placed emphasis on the student experience with the addition of small group teams, replacing the learning outcomes from writing product to writing process and inclusion of four lectures devoted to in-library learning and free work time. What started with one instructor and one librarian and a group of 30 science undergraduate students has expanded to three sections, with three instructors, three librarians, and 90 second, third and fourth year chemistry, geology and natural sciences students. This session will explain the evolution of librarian involvement as instructors in the course. Notably, librarians have had a supportive environment with creative and critical freedom to suggest changes and expansion to the librarian content. Librarians currently teach critical appraisal, searching, and citation management. Join us for a conversation of what librarian-faculty partnerships look like, and how librarians are partners in student learning and undergraduate research for SCIE 311.

- ItemOpen AccessSocial Web & Communication Tools: Social Bookmarking, Instant Messaging, Weblogs & RSS Feeds(2006-06-12) Lee, JenniferTools for Web collaboration are increasing and range from one-to-many tools that allow sharing of personal links to one-to-one communications tools such as instant messaging. This poster shows how these tools can be applied to library settings and how they will impact reference and teaching. Online “social bookmarking” and reference management services help researchers organize and share information. URLs or bibliographic information can be saved, “tagged” using descriptors, and commented upon. Ensuing list(s) are available to all registrants, enabling users with same or similar tags to discover the research that others are reading. These tools have implications on the information seeking behaviors of researchers. Weblogs (“blogs”) can be used as communication space between instructor and student, within research/student groups, or between library and user. They are easy to set up and are an effective liaison tool. Tables of contents, site content, and search alerts are increasingly available as RSS (Really Simple Syndication / Rich Site Summary) feeds. Libraries can also create feeds to announce new books, or for news distribution services via blogs. Instant messaging (IM) is a communication method favored by university students. More immediate than email, yet less intrusive than phone, it offers clients and colleagues options for making contact. There are many free applications available; some aggregate the most popular ones (Yahoo!, MSN, ICQ, Google). Tools to be covered include: Connotea, CiteULike, Blogger, Bloglines, Trillian, Meebo
- ItemOpen AccessSupporting Students as Scholars: Using the Library Context to Investigate How Graduate Students Learn About Publishing(2023-11-11) Hurrell, Christie; Beatty, Susan; Lee, Jennifer; McClurg, Caitlin; Murphy, JamesGraduate students are increasingly encouraged to publish during their studies. But how do they learn this process? In this study, a team of librarians used focus groups to uncover the process for learning and teaching the “threshold concept” of academic publishing (Townsend et al, 2011). The focus groups, conducted with graduate students and faculty advisors, resulted in a rich qualitative dataset on the context of teaching and learning of academic publishing. Thematic analysis was used to identify key themes emerging from transcripts. Findings from this research indicate that students rely heavily on disciplinary mentors for knowledge and support, and appreciate experiential learning opportunities to scaffold their skills. Noted learning gaps included feeling ready and confident to embark on the publishing process, and realizing that mentors may not communicate tacit knowledge about publishing. Additionally, students emphasized the importance of integrating the mental health and wellness impacts of this topic into instruction. In response, the research team has developed an openly-licensed multimedia instructional guide that covers key topics of interest highlighted by both student and faculty participants. The guide responds to students’ expressed preference for information available to them at the point of need, and has been systematically evaluated by learners. The team will share how the guide is being used in collaborative teaching efforts at our institution. This study contributes new knowledge on how students learn, and faculty teach, skills relating to academic publishing. It also illuminates the unique teaching context of librarians, who typically have limited time to interact with graduate students in the classroom, and whose teaching must complement that of disciplinary faculty. Our collaborative approach to learning and teaching about this topic allows us to harness expertise from across our institution to support the learning needs of graduate students.
- ItemOpen AccessSupporting Students in the Publishing Process: A Blended Learning Approach(2023-04-27) Hurrell, Christie; Lee, Jennifer; McClurg, CaitlinThis presentation will describe the development and assessment of evidence-informed learning resources for graduate students on the topic of academic publishing. Students pursuing graduate degrees are under increasing pressure to publish, often to bolster their career prospects, or to enhance their university’s profile (1). Although both disciplinary mentors and academic librarians have developed learning resources to help students advance their knowledge and skills about academic publishing, these resources are not always based on a robust needs assessment and may not meet students’ actual learning needs (2–5). In response, the research team conducted focus groups with graduate students to understand what they wanted to learn, and how they wanted to learn it. We found that students are eager for a blended learning approach to this topic that uses online resources to address information gaps at the point of need, combined with more personalized and relational learning spaces to support community and well-being. We will describe how we are responding to student feedback with an online multimedia guide as well as exploring opportunities for learning communities for academic publishing support. We expect that this session will be useful for academic staff, librarians, and others who work to support graduate students’ learning, and for graduate students seeking to learn more about publishing. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore some of the resources already created as part of this project, and to brainstorm with the research team on how to further integrate these concepts into existing learning supports.
- ItemOpen AccessTeaching research skills through embedded librarianship(Emerald, 2017) Hoffman, Nadine; Beatty, Susan; Feng, Patrick; Lee, JenniferPurpose: This pilot aims to study a way of integrating research and writing support into a university course along with content. Research and writing skills are not taught explicitly in most university courses, yet these skills are increasingly required both in and outside of the classroom. Design/methodology/approach: An embedded, collaborative instructional team comprising the instructor, librarians and writing specialists re-designed a first-year inquiry-based learning course, incorporating research and writing instruction throughout, formative and summative assessments and a flipped classroom model. At the end of the course, each member of the team reflected on their collaborative and individual experiences. The team also surveyed students to gauge their perceptions of the research and writing sessions. Findings: The team learned from this experience and noted a large, but rewarding, time commitment. The flipped classroom model allowed the tailoring of instruction to students’ needs but required more work by librarians to prepare content and to grade. Students indicated appreciation for repeated interactions with librarians and reported confidence to use the skills taught. Originality/value: Embedding librarians throughout the course with a writing specialist, as well as involvement in grading, is novel – this may be the first example in the literature of “deep integration”. The concept of “embedded librarianship” can be enhanced by expanding librarian and other support roles in a course.
- ItemOpen AccessTraditional instruction reformed with flipped classroom techniques(2015-06) Lee, Jennifer; Beatty, Susan; Feng, Patrick; Hoffman, Nadine; McDermott, BrendaA flipped classroom moves away from a lecture-then-homework model by assigning “content” before the class, and then engaging students with the content or concepts during the class. This poster describes the redesign of a series of information literacy sessions in a first-year inquiry-based learning class, by employing flipped classroom techniques. It also reflects on the collaborative process of session redesign and lessons learned about executing a flipped classroom. The redesign came about as a result of the course instructor providing librarians with additional time, and an assessment component. The instructor, librarians, and a writing support coordinator worked together to revamp what was originally traditional lecture-style sessions. The pre-assigned content also included short quizzes administered through a course management system to ensure students understood content before class. Facilitated classroom activities allowed students to practice concepts with feedback. A final assessment component was also administered through the course management system and will be compared to quiz marks.
