Item Open Access A Contextual Examination of Maimonides's Attitudes Towards Women(2016) Xu, Miche; Segal, EliezerThis thesis explores Maimonides’s attitudes towards women. The thesis focuses on Maimonides’s philosophical treatise, his medical works, and his works concerning ethics. An accurate and more comprehensive analysis of Maimonides’s position on women is the primary objective of this thesis. In the end, this thesis demonstrates that Maimonides’s attitudes towards women can be best understood within the contexts of the respective works in which they appear and with an awareness of their historical setting.Item Open Access Ask now of the days that are past(University of Calgary Press, 2005) Segal, EliezerWritten for a general audience, the essays collected here present refreshing and often humorous glimpses of various topics in Jewish history and traditional religious literature. Inspired by the diversity of Jewish thought, author and scholar Eliezer Segal sheds light on the social and political forces that have brought the Jewish community together in the past and still speak with familiarity to a modern western culture. Enlightening and entertaining, Professor Segal's writing is a rare blend of scholarship and wit, highlighting contemporary experiences that bring the rich heritage of Jewish civilization to life for the everyday reader. With an extensive and broad knowledge of ancient and medieval Jewish social and religious traditions, Segal deftly crafts anecdotes and explanations that address the tribulations of contemporary life. From topics as diverse as panhandling, tennis, vampires, and the history of the tomato to themes as universal as weddings, charity, and taxation, the essays presented here, some for the first time in English, all include detailed notes on sources for further reading. Equally suited to those after a light-hearted romp or those on a serious quest for knowledge, Ask Now of the Days that Are Past is sure to satisfy anyone who has ever wondered how the past still influences us today.Item Open Access The “Five Early” (sNga lnga) Texts of the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition rDzogs chen Sems sde: A Historical, Literary and Textual Study with Critical Edition and Translation of the Tibetan Texts(2019-08-28) Derbac, Mihai; Apple, James B.; Keyworth, George A.; Segal, Eliezer; Framarin, Christopher G.; Moore, AnneThe objective of this dissertation is to critically examine the formative period (8th to 9th century CE) of the rDzogs chen Sems sde tradition. Primarily associated with the rNying ma school, the rDzogs chen teachings are considered by many Tibetans, such as the present-day Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso and Namkhai Norbu, to be among the most advanced forms of Buddhist teachings. rDzogs chen posits pristine awareness, the unconditioned and “ever-present” state, as the direct path to the realization of perfection. This study is based on a historico-critical analysis and text-critical examination of five classical rDzogs chen Sems sde texts—Rig pa’i khu byug (The Cuckoo’s Song of Awareness); rTsal chen sprug pa (The Great Potentiality); Khyung chen lding ba (The Great Garuda in Flight); rDo la gser zhun (The Refining of Gold from Ore); and Mi nub pa’i rgyal mtshan (The Un-waning Victory Banner)—and a relatively obscure historical source, the tenth century bSam gtan mig sgron (Torch of the Eye of Meditation). I utilize a two-fold approach for this project that incorporates diachronic (historical) as well as synchronic (textual) examinations. The critical analysis of the historical development will examine the formative phases of the rDzogs chen Sems sde tradition, including evidence of lineage history and textual transmission. I also establish critical editions and translate the five early Sems sde texts.Item Open Access Fruits of the garden: myth within Jewish and Islamic scriptures(2011) Fares, Ali Adel; Segal, EliezerItem Open Access "I am Joseph, your brother": use of the brother model in the Vatican's conception of the Jewish-Catholic relationship, 1958-2004(2004) Gibbard, Nathan; Segal, EliezerThis thesis seeks to explore the Vatican's use of the "brother" metaphorical model in its understanding of the relationship between Jews and Catholics. After providing a brief historical background, the thesis examines how the "brother" model of Jewish-Catholic relationships has developed since the time of John XXIII. From John XXIll's simple statement of reconciliation, "I am Joseph, your brother," a change in the metaphorical relationship can be seen. Tracing the development of the brother model through John XXIII' s reign up until the present, the thesis will examine how Vatican language in papal and curial documents has changed and adjusted over time, expressing different understandings of the relationship between Catholics and Jews.Item Open Access Midrash as a Refracting Lens: A.J. Heschel's Illumination of Jewish History(2016) Andrews Pardes, Zvi; Segal, Eliezer; Wyatt, Nicole; Bergen, DavidA.J. Heschel’s Torah Min Ha-Shamayyim BeAspaqlaria Shel Ha-Doroth (TMS) never received the comprehensive scholarly attention that it deserves. Its philosophical and theological emphasis was out of place in the oeuvre in which it was published. Decades later it resurged in popularity, but by and large not amongst those with the textual and philological grounding in rabbinics to assess it meaningfully. TMS stands as a compelling analysis of early-rabbinic theological trends and the historical ramifications therein. I pay careful attention to Heschel’s sources and other experts in the field. I demonstrate that there is a decisive difference in philosophical outlook that can be traced between the schools of Rabbis Aqiva and Ishmael respectively, just as Heschel argues. Likewise, the theological dichotomies which Heschel articulates between these two textual personalities and their schools is shown to inform later permutations of these tensions throughout the Jewish History of Ideas.Item Open Access The choosing people: constructing jewish buddhist identity in America(2009) Libin, Nicole Heather; Segal, EliezerItem Open Access Vanishing frontiers: re-thinking the mystical in Avicenna and Maimonides(2010) Merchant, Yasmin; Hughes, Aaron; Segal, Eliezer
