A change in perception: a hermeneutical inquiry into the experiences of women who practice yoga and their perceived body image

This hermeneutic-phenomenological study explored the experiences of women who practice yoga and their perceived body image and self-esteem. Women in North America often struggle with body image issues because of the intense focus our society has on unrealistic beauty standards for women. Women's relationships with their bodies are complex and can be affected negatively by many different things. As such it was important to explore how yoga might affect women's perceptions of their bodies, and explore if yoga could be a positive influence in women's lives and their relationship with their bodies. The study found five themes (Experiencing a change in self-esteem and/or body image; Reflecting on the media's representation of the female body; Yoga as a way to balance life; Mind-body wholeness; and Formation and change in identity) and seventeen sub-themes which emerged from interviews that were conducted with five participants. Implications for counsellors are discussed.

A needs assessment of potential online counselling service clients

The goal of this research project was to conduct a needs assessment in order to elicit the opinions and perceptions of potential online counselling clients on various aspects of online counselling. Using these results in conjunction with information gathered from an in-depth literature review, the researcher made recommendations to the agency partner in this study, the Calgary Counselling Centre (CCC), about the kinds of online counselling services to provide, as well as the professional resources and development required to competently offer online counselling. With the CCC looking to expand their services to include online counselling, the final report will be used to decide which services they will implement and how to ensure that their staff has the competencies required to deliver them.

Academic and psychological impact of cyber bullying

Cyber bullying has emerged as a new form of bullying affecting a large portion of children. Children that were victims of cyber bullying (n = 239) in grades 6, 7, 10, and 11 were surveyed to. examine whether they experienced impaired academic performance and psychological well-being. Seven types of cyber bullying were identified. Through correlations the results demonstrated that all seven types of cyber bullying are significantly related to children's well-being. One-way ANOVAs and t-tests indicate that specific characteristics of the victim (sex, grade, and perpetrator) are associated with differential impact. In addition, this study found that deconstructing cyber bullying by type reveals unique information. For some types of cyber bullying, for example, girls and young children report more severe impact than boys and older children. Overall, the study demonstrates the importance of examining different types of cyber bullying to gain an understanding of children's experiences of this phenomenon .
