Abstract
This supporting paper is a brief description of my earlier work and a reflection of my artistic process during the MFA program. Through the course of these last two years, I have been able to explore ideas of perceptual experience in relation to places. My art practice and theoretical research have reinforced the importance of states of consciousness in the act of perception. During my studies, I learned to attune my senses to phenomenological aspects of light and minute visual processes that can reveal ephemeral moments in everyday life. I found that drawing is an acute exercise of perception; it is a vehicle that allows me to further my understanding about the world around me. Through my final thesis Perceptual Drawing—the last of four—I continued this process of heightening my awareness. These active drawings recorded states of my consciousness and can be viewed as a translation of how I experienced visual perception.
