Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate why patients in Qatar do not attend Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs. The Andersen Behavioral Model (ABM) guided the researcher’s thinking while completing this thesis. The target population were patients (n=850) who were referred to a CR program at the Heart Hospital from January 1 – August 30, 2015 and who did not attend the program. Telephone interviews were conducted to complete a demographic survey, health survey, and the Cardiac Rehabilitation Barriers Scale (Shanmugasegaram et al., 2012). A descriptive analysis was conducted on interviews completed by 46 patients using SPSS. Results found the principle reasons for not attending the CR program were work responsibilities (56.5%), time constraints (50%), already exercising at home (39.1%), distance to program (39.1%), travel time (32.6%), and not needing CR (32.6%). Results from this study can influence future research, education, and policy to better facilitate access to CR programs.
