Abstract
In the Calgary region of southwestern Alberta, sustained growth pressure and land use change have had cumulative effects on the regional landscape including habitat and species diversity. The Calgary Metropolitan Plan (2014) has identified the value of maintaining regional biodiversity in future land use planning. However, the challenge of moving from policy to implementation is complicated because species-based management approaches do not fit easily within municipal land use planning under the Alberta Municipal Government Act (2015) which is focused on land development. This thesis proposes a spatial approach to biodiversity based on landscape connectivity and landscape structure and function at a regional scale that is more compatible with municipal and regional land use planning. A spatial approach connects species specific habitats to spatial landscape factors and can be applied at multiple scales.
