Abstract
This study explores the initial self-presentation of ordinary male and female Instagram user profiles. A content analysis was used to analyze the first nine images from 50 publicly accessible, personal profiles. Gender differences were found in photos of human subjects, in terms of body positioning and facial expressions, and in photos of objects that ultimately reflect traditional gender norms and stereotypes. Furthermore, findings suggest users present an ‘Instagram-self’: one that is uniquely individual yet conforms to an Instagram culture that is entirely founded on banal images. Contributions to the fields of online social networking sites and photography are discussed. Limitations and areas for future research are discussed.
