Abstract
Characterized by multifaceted social, political, gender, and familial violence, Colombia has long been considered a country at war with itself. With prolific representations of male-dominated discourse in this environment of violence, which typifies Colombian literature, the representation of the female subject is often infrequent and problematic. This thesis explores the representations of the female body in the novel, Delirio, by Colombian author Laura Restrepo, with the intention of understanding it as an excluded subject, or social abject, created by violence and hegemonic norms. Drawing on an interdisciplinary theoretical approach, from psychoanalysis and cultural theory to feminist studies, this analysis proves that representations of violence fuelled by conservative cultural practices can effectively silence both female-centered literature, and female agency within Restrepo’s novel.
