Abstract
This thesis comprises a composition for a percussion ensemble of four performers and an accompanying analytical essay. Entitled Polarity, the composition has five movements with a total duration of approximately eighteen minutes. The musical material comes from two fundamental sources. First, inspired by the theory of the Heptagram, a numerical series generates much of the composition's rhythmic, melodic and harmonic material. Second, two indigenous tunes, one from Canada and one from Mexico, occur in various transformations. The essay begins with an explanation of the context of the piece and its position within the composer's work. It then proceeds to a general description of the Heptagram theory that inspired the work. The major portion of the essay contains a detailed discussion of the form of the piece and its musical materials with examples and excerpts from the score.
