Abstract
Programme music was a hotly debated concern in the Romantic period and one that found a champion in the figure of Franz Liszt. The extramusical ideas represented in his work went far beyond previous conception of mere word-painting or even narrational scheme and became the impetus that redefined not only formal structure, but the very approach to composition. Sposalizio and Il penseroso from Annees de Pelerinage Deuxieme Annee: Italie, and the two Aux Cypres de la Villa d'Este: Threnodie and Les jeux d'eaux a la Villa d'Este from Annees de Pelerinage Troisieme Annee, form the basis of a discussion relative to Liszt's engagement with a wide range of extramusical stimuli at psychological, iconographical, symbolic, and archetypal levels. Hi personal and musical aesthetic , modem harmonic language, new approaches to formal consideration, key relation hip, thematic transformation, and musically symbolic reference are explored in relationship to hi programmatic intents.
