Abstract
Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a relatively new topic in China. Few cities have clearly incorporated TOD concepts into their planning mandate. However, with the plan and construction of modem rapid transit systems in some metropolises, the development or revitalization of transit station areas has become a new planning issue. Thus, this research study is intended to explore the application of TOD concepts in a Chinese transit station area-Datun town center. Datun town center is a proposed 0.69-square-kilometer town center project. According to its current plans, it will be developed into an attractive urban center to provide services and amenities for its future residents and surrounding communities. Since a regional rapid transit system has also been planned to reach the town center with an express bus station, its potential for TOD should be taken into account in the process of urban planning and design. This research study seeks inspiration and education from a review of TOD theory and practices. Key learnings from the review are then applied into Datun town center's specific contexts for developing a TOD urban design solution as an alterative of its future development.
