Abstract
The use of low-density parity-check codes for error correction in a quantum key diwtribution protocol is examined. These code are suitable for high speed implementation in hardware because of the potential for parallel computation. With this in mind, the design of parity check matrice is examined and several modification to an existing matrix design metholology are proposed. The matrices designed are characterized, and it is shown that, with minor modification fixed-point arithmetic can be used without degrading the decoding performance. A scalable VHDL implementation of the decoder has been designed. While a parallel decoder with large block length was not possible with the current design, the achievable secret key rate is an improvement over a software implementation by a factor of ten. There are a number of avenues that may be pursued to improve the hardware, and it is recommended that they are investigated in future work.
