Abstract
This Master's Degree Project examines potential architectural opportunities created through the study of demographic trends. Population influxes have historically influenced supply and demand within the free market system, which in turn has benefited those with the foresight to accurately predict such patterns. The Baby Boomer demographic represents a massive generational cohort that has traditionally been able to drastically affect supply and demand based simply on their common interests. As the baby boomers enter their retirement years, the demand for accessible housing options in Canada will increase as the majority of current options will soon prove to be too difficult and uncomfortable for seniors. By 2026, 21 % of Canada's population will consist of seniors, and without proper preparation, housing the baby boomer demographic will become a major predicament. By effectively re-evaluating the traditional assisted living model, along with the incorporation of principles designed to preserve independence and promote suitable options for seniors, an architectural solution will emerge that will not only sustain this massive population influx, but will also provide amenities for the benefit of future generations.
