Abstract
Centrally located within the Republic is the notion that an ideal city-state has the ability to create ideal citizens because the city, itself, was created as an ideal form that would in turn represent a static, ideal foundation of knowledge for its citizens. This early notion of utopianism took hold of the imaginations of urban planners such as Frederick Law Olmsted and, although the current practice of urban planning eschews this historical influence, I will argue that a credible alternative to the practice of conceiving of, and planning the city based upon utopian ideals has not occurred. This argument will be based upon an analysis of Plato's Republic, early urban reform movements such as The Garden City, and The City Beautiful Movement, and current urban planning methodologies that employ long- range visioning as the basis for creating blueprints for the future, such as those found within the ImagineCALGARY project.
