Abstract
Peroxyacyl nitrates and nitryl chloride are two nitrogen oxide reservoir species, which release N02 upon degradation, and thus can contribute to tropospheric ozone formation in remote areas. Here, calibration and operating procedures for an iodide ion chemical ionization mass spectrometer for the measurement of peroxyacyl nitrates and nitryl chloride at ambient concentrations are described. An in-situ photochemical calibration source was developed to generate gaseous peroxyacyl nitrate samples and used to calibrate the chemical ionization mass spectrometer. This source produces peroxyacyl nitrates through ketone photolysis in the presence of NO (or N02) and 0 2. The chemical ionization mass spectrometer was used for ambient monitoring studies of peroxyacyl nitrates and nitryl chloride. The first measurements of nitryl chloride in Canada were made during the long term field study SNOWCAT (Species of NOy in the Wintertime Calgary Alberta Troposphere). Variations in nitryl chloride mixing ratios as a function of season and wind direction are discussed.
