Abstract
This study investigated the application of Spearman's Law of Diminishing Returns (SLODR) to the Construct of Emotional Intelligence. The Bar-On Short Form Emotional Intelligence Quotient was administered to 1472 Canadian University students. The participants' scores on the EQ-i was then divided into two groups, according to Spearman's law of distinguishing high ability from low ability, those considered to have low EI scores, and those of High EI scores. Correlation analysis of the subtests within the two groups indicates low inter-correlation. Possible reasons for the low correlations are problems with SLODR methodology, Bar-On self-reporting measures, the defining characteristics of Emotional Intelligence, and poor EQ-i construct validity.
