Abstract
This mixed-methods study explored the experiences of ten individuals who were adopted near birth in relation to attachment, belonging, and the impact on close relationships. Participants completed three questionnaires (a questionnaire with demographic information, a measure of attachment within the family of origin, and a measure of attachment within adult relationships) and a semi-structured interview. Participants responses from the interview and the questionnaires were the main sources of data in addition to researcher journals. Data analysis was guided by hermeneutic phenomenology. The themes that were identified include: "Having Knowledge of Adoption Context," "Thinking and Talking about Adoption," "Attitudes on Adoption," "Searching and Reuniting," "Experiencing a Sense of Belonging and Identity," "Attitudes and Beliefs on Being in Close Relationships," "Experiences in Close Relationships are Varied," and "Adoption as a Paradox." These themes are discussed in light of research on attachment, adoption, and belonging. Future recommendations and implications for counselling are discussed.
