Abstract
As Alberta students engage in school global projects addressing the human rights and well-being of people in developing countries, they are forming perceptions of developing countries and what constitutes responsible action with respect to these places. This narrative study was undertaken to explore these perceptions as they exist for 10 grade six students from 2 Alberta schools who are or have been engaged in such projects. Students in this study, regardless of project context, perceived developing countries to be all very much the same: Places in need, lacking education and technology, and dependent upon the developed world to progress. Action with respect to these countries was understood as desirable and essential, should be well-informed, is unidirectional assistance provided/or the other, and depends a great deal on money. Through this work, students feel they have developed an increased awareness of issues and believe they can act as agents of change.
