Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gender influences of female international students who are planning to remain in Canada after graduation. Eight participants shared the experiences that played a relevant role in their career and immigration choices. A thematic analysis approach was used to gain a better understanding of gender-related aspects of their experiences, which generated seven categories and twenty nine themes. The participants' narratives were framed through the use of the System Theory Framework (STF, Patton & McMahon, 2006) as well as acculturation and cultural identity models. Results suggested that family influences, career-related considerations, and gender-specific aspects of these women's identities were instrumental in their choice to stay in the host country. These findings aim to broaden the literature regarding the international student population and to provide further information about the strengths, motivations, and challenges faced by female international students who are considering permanent immigration to Canada.
