Abstract
The goal ofthis thesis project was to examine the kinds of adult-organized activities children in Calgary pursue during their out-of-school hours. My research explored how decisions are made in regards to these activities, what considerations are taken into account when activities are selected, and the impact these activities had on parents. Research participants included 18 coaches, instructors, and leaders, and mothers, fathers, and children (aged between nine and 14) from 12 Calgary families. Children's activities were found to be a product of complex decision-making, and required considerable work on the part of parents, particularly mothers.
