Abstract
Cognitive systems refer to systems that can learn and modify their behaviors on the basis of experience. Instead of being explicitly programmed, they learn and reason from their interaction with the environment in a way that mimics the human intelligence capabilities. Unlike the deterministic programmable systems, cognitive systems are capable of reasoning, creating hypotheses, making recommendations, acquiring knowledge and refining behaviors in a premeditated manner, through interaction with the surrounding environment. The purpose of this thesis is to establish the theoretical foundation of cognitive systems, define the necessary and sufficient building blocks of a hybrid cognitive architecture that holds the capacity to model different cognitive systems. The proposed architecture is applied to model two different cognitive systems to Establish the empirical evidence that cognitive systems can augment ordinary systems and human thoughts and actions by applying the theoretical cognitive architectures and models on real-life problems.
