Abstract
This thesis examines some syntactic rules in Sarcee. Chapter I presents some background material on Sarcee phonology and morphology. A Subject-Object Inversion rule is proposed in Chapter II to account for sentences where the basic word order of Subject - Object - Verb is changed to Object - Subject - Verb. Also in such sentences a Y!_ prefix is attached to the verb. This rule called yi-attachment, must be a separate operation from S-0 Inversion in order to account for sentences in which the verb contains the Y!_ prefix but where S-0 Inversion has not applied. They!_ prefix is attached to a transitive verb when the VP does not contain a NP, i.e. an object. Chapter III examines relative clause formation. A Relativization rule which deletes either the relativized NP or the antecedent NP is consideredQ This analysis fails to account for certain sentences. In an alternative analysis, it is argued that Relativization deletes only the relativized NP, and a Permutation rule, which is independently motivated, accounts for the problematic sentences.
