Abstract
The objective of this thesis is to examine the factors that affect the flexural bond stress between masonry units and mortar. Quantitative expressions are developed relating flexural bond stress to unit, mortar and workmanship and environmental factors. Bond stress values specified in CSA, CAN S304-M78 - Masonry Design and Construction for Buildings - are examined and improvements suggested. Other Codes of Practice -- British, American and Australian -- are also examined and comparisons with previously published research on bond are also made. The units studied are clay bricks manufactured by IXL Industries and concrete bricks manufactured by All-Kind Masonries. Statistical techniques are used in the analysis of the results.
