Abstract
This thesis attempts to document the research and process of the director of a production of Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Grace of Mary Traverse presented at The University of Calgary October 19-22 and 25-29, 1994. Furthermore, this thesis attempts to provide the reader with a record of the experience of directing the play. To that end the more objective material is inter-woven with personal reflections upon the nature of the directorial choices made within the production. In addition, much of the introductory material serves to present the author's personal socio-political agenda to the reader. The thesis continues with a biography of the playwright and a textual analysis in chapter one, an historical overview in chapter two and a dramaturgical interpretation of the text in chapters three, four and five. A short conclusion ties the disperate threads of the anaysis together and reinforces some of the thesis' major points.
