Abstract
This thesis examines the role of women journalists in Alberta from 1905-1930. This study reveals that women journalists actively participated in shaping Alberta's history. The study of journalism history has traditionally been written from a male point of view , and as a result the issues relating directly to women have often been marginalized. Most historical studies about women's contribution to Canadian journalism history have concentrated on retrieving women journalists and placing them within the historical record. This thesis suggests that women journalists in Alberta worked together to create a more open society. Using their experiences as women's page editors, authors, and members in the Canadian Women's Press Club, these women recognized the power of the pen and started their own newspapers. Finally, this thesis suggests that the natural inclination of women to write cannot be ignored. By writing from a woman's standpoint, and sharing their experiences with the readers, these women were sharing their private sphere with the public sphere.
