Abstract
Through the study of gas plant utilization in the province of Alberta, from a project management perspective, it was possible to make recommendations to project management theory relating to initial project planning and external issues. The recommendations promote broader longer term thinking consistent with sustainable development goals. Reclamation planning is suggested to form part of the initial project planning phase before financial approvals have been received. External issue management is suggested to include an on-going dialogue to collaborate to solutions rather than allowing issues to grow until they must be regulated. The gas plant utilization statistics were compiled in a database from which many queries for trends were made. Influencing factors of industry were also reviewed. As many as 89 gas processing facilities that are licensed were found to be dormant. Fifty percent of the gas plants provide only 10 percent of the processing capacity. Load factors of individual facilities were determined and presented. Three gas plant cases were studied in detail. Improved economic returns were cited for projects considering reclamation in the planning phase.
