Abstract
This study explores the experiences of women with strong religious convictions who had endured and terminated marital relationships within which abuse took place. A qualitative method of analysis was employed combining concepts from grounded theory with concepts from phenomenology. Data was collected from a sample of eight women, each of whom retained her religious views and remained within the church. Two major categories emerged from the data. These focused on factors which contributed to participants' tolerance of abuse and those involved in the decision to leave. In the category entitled "Staying," seven themes and twenty nine sub-themes emerged. In the "Leaving" category, there were five themes, involving twenty sub-themes. Findings indicate that a theory which provides an integrated perspective can best explain and describe the phenomenon. Following presentation of the theory, literature relevant to the findings is examined. Study limitations are noted, future directions for research indicated and implications for social work discussed.
