Firm-ENGO strategic alliances as a knowledge-based strategy for sustainability: the case of the joint solutions project in B.C.'s coastal forest products industry

AbstractB. C.'s coastal forest products firms and campaigning environmental nongovernmental organizations (ENGOs) had been engaged in an intense conflict for many years over the management and use of the Province's coastal temperate rainforests. In 2000, in response to marketplace pressures and public policy failures, the two sides laid down their arms and established a strategic alliance for developing innovative new approaches for sustainably managing the coastal forests. The outcome of the alliance was a new knowledge base for sustainable forest management. This research presents a threestage model of knowledge creation based on a firm-civil society alliance.
