dc.description.abstractThis thesis presents a simulation of auroral spectra, intensity values, and the genera­tion of realistic auroral images. Background information for auroral physics and ex­isting research is included. The simulation extends the methodology used in existing auroral simulation research by using dynamic subdivision to model the interactions in a spatial frame of reference, subdividing regions of high activity. The dynamic subdivision method is combined with a view independent mechanism for tracking the reactions to provide an efficient yet comprehensive analysis of auroral behavior. The advantage of the simulation presented in this thesis lies in its flexibility for modeling aurora based on scientifically-sound components and methods while allowing for the easy creation of realistic auroral images and animations suitable for use in the enter­tainment industry. The spectral results and simulation images are compared with existing data. In conclusion, potential extensions of these methods to other areas of auroral research are noted.en
