Abstract
Research on speech synthesis and speech recognition by machine has resulted in devices that allow practical applications of voice as a computer input/output medium. The paper briefly traces the history, applicability and nature of speech, and then goes on to discuss the present possibilities for voice input and output in communication with computers, with a structured view of the options available. The paper then focusses on applications in health care and provides a brief description of several case studies of successful applications of this type.
