ON THE IMPACT OF THE NEW MICROPROCESSORS ON MANAGEMENT STRUCTURES
Abstract
A wide-ranging assessment of the impact of the new
technology of microprocessors on organizational structure and management,
this paper forsees radical changes in the activities of computer-based product
design, as well as a shift in the role of the computer services
division.
The economics of information processing, coupled with the shortage of
computer programmers and system designers, will lead to new
methodologies of software production based on inventories of documented and
commissioned modules. The growing sophistication and decreasing cost of systems to
support hardware and software development will remove some functions
from the computer services division to individual development laboratories;
these will be replaced by a new responsibility for managing company-wide
communications in both administrative and technical domains.
