Abstract
This report presents the findings of the Targeted Gambling Prevalence Study conducted by MarketQuest Research on behalf of the Department of Health and Community Services, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. As a follow-up to the 2005 Newfoundland and Labrador Gambling Prevalence Study, this study is being conducted to explore the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling in specific areas of Newfoundland and Labrador, namely Bell Island, Fogo Island/Change Islands and isolated communities along the South Coast. More specifically, this study will gather data for these targeted areas with respect to: • The prevalence of gambling and problem gambling in these areas; • Profiles of gambler sub-types and players of certain gambling activities; • The relationship between gambling and correlates of gambling including substance use and mental health; • Consequences related to gambling; and • Awareness of support and treatment services. This study will allow an assessment of issues specific to these areas, and may inform the design and development of future initiatives to prevent and treat problem gambling.
