Abstract
This thesis explores the game of hockey as portrayed in Canadian Drama, and introduces Hockey Drama as a unique new sub-genre. It highlights characters from Canadian plays directly or indirectly involved with the game and discusses the impacts of hockey on their lives. This study also examines the use of hockey as a dramatic device in Canadian Drama, namely as a symbol of struggle and conflict. Canadian Hockey Drama productions date back to the late 1960's, and include: Theatre for Young Audiences, Bilingual Drama, Musicals and Shakespeare Adaptations. This study outlines the myriad ways in which Hockey Drama has been employed by playwrights to broach socio-politically relevant Canadian issues.
