The following document is an exploration into the field of clown theatre. The context for the exploration is in that of creation. It is my intention to offer an intellectual analysis of clown theatre creation as well as a practical account in order to provide a balanced and realistic understanding of the topic. The first chapter explores clown theatre in terms of its social impact and general significance in our culture. The second chapter identifies and examines some of the more popular pedagogical approaches to clown training. The final chapter details my own experience of clown theatre creation. I end the exploration with an account of my own impression of my experience so that it may benefit me and my reader in the future. As well, I reflect upon how my cultural understanding of clown theatre relates to my practice as well as to the creative process in general.
