Abstract

This Artist’s Statement reflects on the process of staging Mary Zimmerman’s Argonautika: The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts, produced and presented by the University of Calgary Drama Division in the School of Creative and Performing Arts in the 2022-23 season. The production ran from February 10th-18th. The first chapter covers the play selection process, briefly introduces the play, and lays the groundwork for initial directorial impulses. The second chapter reflects upon early design conversations and incorporating collaborators. The third chapter deepens my reflections on the play, reviewing my research on the heroes and mythology at the centre of the tale, while the fourth chapter discusses selected challenges in applying my directorial vision to the staging of the play. The fifth and final chapter reflects upon the audience's response and suggests potential for further exploration.
