Abstract

This paper explores the idea of investor sentiment and its application within a specific market. The Canadian Energy Service industry 2014-2019 was a space of great volatility and this study will explore that industry and region to understand if the behavior of investors in that era was driven by the fundamental performance of the portfolio firms or if the less tangible effects of sentiment played a heightened role. This three-part study includes a general theoretical exploration of the ideas of sentiment, a set of qualitative interview data sets, and a quantitative study. The results of these studies contribute to the understanding of sentiment in small market applications and the exploration of executive attitudes toward the public market.
