Abstract

International schools in Asia Pacific constitute a unique context for the study of school leadership. Three research questions were posed in this exploratory case study: 1) What contemporary educational leadership approaches do International Baccalaureate school leaders exhibit in the Asia Pacific context? 2) What initial and ongoing professional learning have school leaders in the Asia Pacific International Baccalaureate schools experienced? 3) How might contemporary leadership theories be adapted to develop a unique hybrid system fitting the Asia Pacific International Baccalaureate context? Ten participants representing three geographical areas in the Asia Pacific region were interviewed including India, China, Japan and South East Asia. The twelve findings emanating from the analysis of the data indicate: 1) school leaders enact a variety of contemporary leadership practices, 2) the International Baccalaureate ecosystem provides a supportive network for leaders, and 3) school leaders come to embody hybridity, culture at three different levels, creating a mix of eastern and western leadership practices and processes that operate at the individual, local, national, and international levels. Conclusions that can be drawn from this research indicate that leaders need to be able to flexibly draw upon a variety of contemporary leadership approaches, remain connected through a supportive leadership network, and seek to explicitly develop their cultural knowledge and the capacity of their staff members in terms of working with different cultural assumptions.
