Abstract

Walk the Line: Betwixt [In]Between is written in a format which reflects the cacophony of symbols, signs and motifs of my two thesis exhibitions: MaSh-UP IV: [In]Between Never, NVRLND and NYC/MTA:YYC/LRT. My creative research is constructed on the foundation of the transformative and transitional shift which occurred when Graffiti Art evolved into Street Art. I use the concept of transitory liminal spaces to further extrapolate the embodiment of liminality and its tie to notions of “placemaking”. Here, I invite the “people-in-place” (Schneekloth & Shibley, 1995) to construct meaning and understanding that may lead them to a contemplative moment of self-awareness as a participator within the whole; to grow beyond the self and the shackles of the ego. I frame this as “liminal transcendence”. Liminal spaces are filled with the energy of anticipation, trepidation and excitement. My research creation methodology begins on this foundation. Upon it, I analyze the intrinsic cultural codes of my materials and art making processes through an oscillation between the art practices, spaces and material connotations of Graffiti Art, Street Art and the studio, in relation to sites of final synthesis: the gallery, alternative pop-up venues and public spaces-sanctioned and unsanctioned. This research builds a system based on the theoretical writings of Walter Benjamin, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Jean- François Lyotard and Victor Turner, combined with my study of Tibetan Buddhism.
